Being the Hands and Feet of God: A Biblical Call to Compassionate Service

As followers of Christ, we are called to embody His love in tangible ways. The phrase “being the hands and feet of Jesus” captures this profound truth: since Jesus has ascended, He works through us–His body, the Church–to bring healing, hope, and help to a hurting world.

Scripture provides a clear foundation for this calling. In Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus describes the final judgment, where He commends the righteous for their acts of mercy:

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you looked after me. I was in prison and you came to visit me… Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Here, Jesus identifies so closely with the vulnerable—the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the imprisoned—that serving them is serving Him directly. Our hands become His hands when we offer practical compassion, and our feet carry us to those in need.

The Apostle Paul expands this in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, portraying believers as members of one body:

“Now if the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body… But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be… If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” (vv. 15, 18, 26)

No part is insignificant. Whether through listening ears, helping hands, or willing feet, each of us has a role in extending Christ’s care. As Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, we are “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

In Christian counseling, this calling comes alive. By walking alongside individuals and families facing emotional, relational, or spiritual struggles, we reflect God’s heart—offering biblical wisdom, empathy, and support on a donation basis so that no one is turned away. Every session, every encouraging word, every moment of prayer becomes an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing His healing presence to those who feel unseen or overburdened.

May we each ask daily: Where can I serve today? Who is the “least of these” in my path? As we step out in faith, we fulfill our purpose as Christ’s ambassadors, demonstrating that God’s love is not distant but active, compassionate, and near.

At Red Letter Counseling, we are committed to this mission—being helping hands extended in His name.
